Start from the foundation
Floor framing depends on the support system below it. Confirm that skids, piers or other supports are level and positioned for the design before assembling the floor.
Lay out the frame carefully
A typical framed floor uses perimeter members with joists spanning between them. Exact lumber sizes, spacing and spans depend on the design and loads, so follow the project plan and applicable local requirements.
Check for square
Measure the diagonals before fastening the frame permanently. Equal diagonal measurements are a useful check that a rectangular frame is square.
Add the floor deck
Once the frame is supported, square and fastened, install the specified floor sheathing. Stagger joints when the plan calls for it and keep panel edges supported as required by the design.
